What Is Breast Enlargement Surgery?
Breast Enlargement Surgery, also known as Breast Augmentation, is a surgery used for augmentation of the breasts’ size. For this purpose a medical implant is used; it is inserted into the breast through a cut, made under the breasts. This implant may be silicone with saline or a silicone gel. Nowadays, many women decide to undertake a breast enlargement surgery.
Breast enhancement surgery is usually performed in the following cases: to increase the breast size, to improve the shape and contours of the breasts, to restore their size after pregnancy or weight loss, after a mastectomy, or to make the breasts proportional.
Breast implants made of saline solution are usually used in the surgical augmentation. They are preferred because the body assimilates the saline solution safely in case of leaks or other damages. The procedure begins with a cut, made under the breast’s bottom crease or along the lower edge of the areola. Then, the implant is inserted through the cut, it is put under the breast tissue, and it is adjusted so that it takes the right position and the required shape. The surgery ends with the closure of the cut with stitches. According to some surgeons the implant should be placed under the chest muscle because this may decrease the risk of Capsular Contracture, a condition defined as hardening of the tissue around the implant. It will also make easier the mammography procedures.
Breast enhancement surgery usually takes 1-2 hours and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Normally, general anesthesia is used but in some cases may be used an epidural anesthesia. After the surgery the stitches are covered with gauze and the breasts are supported by a special bra. The stitches are usually removed after 10 to 14 days. The bandage should be kept dry for the time it is worn.
After the surgery patients may experience a discomfort expressed in bruising, swelling or soreness but special medications can reduce these side effects. Most women feel ready to continue their normal life and routine a few days after the surgery. The scars from the procedure usually disappear after a few months.
A woman may undertake a breast enhancement surgery on condition that she is aged 18 or more, she is not pregnant and she has no medical problems. Some insurance companies may cover the cost of breast enlargement surgery made for medical reasons, for example breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery.
Surveys show that most of the women who have a breast augmentation will undertake at least one more breast enhancement surgery in their lives. According to the results of the surveys, most of the women who have breast enlargement surgery are happy with the results.
